I've been using Anki since solar day ane of medical schoolhouse with peachy success. It has allowed me to have a life outside of studying by freeing upwards time for leisure, basketball, gymming, hanging out, tutoring, research, school club events, and more on meridian of all the material we take to written report for classes. I never crammed for a unmarried test in medical school using this method. I constantly get asked about how to use Anki. Most people showtime using Anki and give information technology upwards shortly afterward because of the steep learning bend in trying to effigy out the software and mobile apps. For that reason, I am going to lay out how to use Anki for the first two years of medical school. I won't become into why Anki works and how smashing it is, at that place are hundreds of articles on the cyberspace detailing that (check the bottom of this article). For now, you lot should to do as I say and trust the procedure, but those of you lot who are curious I recommend reading the official Anki transmission. These will be a series of posts about how to utilize Anki in different areas of studying such as for boards and for class. I tried to go on this tutorial equally concise equally possible without compromising anything. Stick with it and I promise yous huge payoffs. If you have any questions, just reach out to me.
Downloading Anki and Add-ons
Before y'all tin follow along in setting upwardly Anki, you will need to download the following. You can download Anki 2.0 or 2.i, whichever you prefer.
Anki for Mac/Windows
One time yous've installed Anki, you lot should download a few add-ons to optimize your feel.

Downloading Decks
After installing all of the in a higher place, restart Anki and all the addons should fire up. Now that you have the scaffolding, information technology's time to download decks and start using them. One of the best decks out there is the Zanki deck created by an anonymous medical student and edited/updated constantly by the Reddit community. This deck has detailed cards from all of First Aid plus Pathoma, BRS Physio, Sketchy Medical, and Kaplan Lecture Notes. There are other popular decks so option i yous like. My system volition piece of work with any deck every bit long every bit the cards are organized by tags. If you wish to employ a deck which is not organized by hierarchical tags, you have to tag the cards yourself or download an auto tagger add-on. These decks can be found in the sidebar of the Medical School Anki Subreddit. I practice not accept credit for creating whatever of these decks and all copyrighted information/images belong to their respective owners.
To install a deck, download it and double click on the .apkg file.
Setting Up Anki
Now that you have all that you need in your hands, it'south time to prepare the cards. Your main screen of Anki should await like this ⟶
You need to do a few more than things earlier yous tin can go on. Click the [Sync] button on the superlative right paw corner and create an AnkiWeb business relationship (it'south free and allows y'all to sync between all your devices). So go to [Anki] ⟶ [Preferences] and have the settings for each tab as follows:
Click the gear icon next to the principal decks to open up [Options]. The [Options grouping:] should be [Default]. Y'all tin create multiple selection groups for different decks but I like to keep information technology simple by just having two (I'll explicate why in just a bit). For the [Default] options grouping, change the settings equally shown below:
Every bit y'all are nevertheless on the Options bill of fare, click the gear icon and [Add] an options group called "50N 50R Ordered". Now for this options group, change the settings as shown below:
Anki allows you to take a unlike options grouping for each deck but you really need just 2, the default and the ane yous customized. Initially, all decks should be gear up to Default. To modify the options in majority, click the gear icon next to the chief decks, click the gear again in the options grouping ⟶ click [Ready for all subdecks]. The decks titled "Combined Current" and "Combined Review" should have an Options-group setting of "50N 50R Ordered".
The "Combined Current" deck volition include any cards that you lot are studying for your electric current module.
The "Combined Review" deck will include everything that you've already covered minus the current module stuff.
You are almost ready to start studying. First, go to the Browser and click [Whole Collection]. Highlight all of the cards and click [Suspend]. Suspended cards will be highlighted in yellow.
As y'all arroyo a arrangement, open up the browser ⟶ get to the relevant subdeck by clicking on the tags next to the browser ⟶ un-suspend any card that is relevant to y'all from that sub-deck. Optionally, move those cards to the 'Combined Current' deck if you are studying them for a current module. Having the "Combined Current" deck allows you to prioritize cards for your current module if you ever fall behind on reviewing former stuff). In one case an examination is over, move all the cards from "Combined Electric current" back to "Combined Review", and repeat this process for the adjacent exam. Using this organization, y'all should be chiseling away at the "Combined Review" deck 24-hour interval by day until all cards are eventually ' Mature ' and are solidly ingrained in your mind.
At the end of a module/class, continue in heed the suspended cards that you never went through for that module because either your curriculum did not encompass them or you just didn't feel like studying them. These cards are still considered high yield according to First Aid and Pathoma so I recommend un-suspending them at some point and going through them just like your regular cards. As for cards that yous made for class during a current module, it is upwards to you if y'all desire to continue studying them or suspend them indefinitely (never delete them). I like to continue studying them since the interval keeps getting longer and longer and it takes very little fourth dimension to review.
What to do Every Day
If you follow my method, you will accept 3 decks to study from each day (Class + Combined Current + Combined Review). Ideally, you will almost never have new cards in the 'Combined Review' deck. Click the [Stats] icon from the principal decks and see how many new cards yous have waiting for you lot.
At present count the number of days you accept earlier your next exam minus a few days. In the Combined decks, take the total number of new cards and carve up by the number of days you have to report. This is how many new cards you have to complete each solar day then that you finish the deck before your test. You will practise the aforementioned for the 'Class' deck with cards that you made from your lecture textile. Since you will not have the class cards pre-made, estimate how many you lot will make for each lecture, add together upwards the total, and carve up by the number of days to see how many new lecture cards you should do per day. Ideally, you lot won't have to calculate this because you should be completing all newly made lecture cards the day they are made. (Ex. If for the current deck I have 550 cards and I want to consummate them in 14 days. 550/14 = most 40 new cards per day)
You study session should follow this sequence: ⟶ 'Form' ⟶ 'Combined Current' ⟶ 'Combined Review'. Once you end studying a deck you volition run into a ' Congratulations ' screen stating that yous have finished your reviews for the day ("Today'due south review limit has been reached, but there are even so cards waiting to be reviewed. For optimum memory, consider increasing the daily limit in the options"). Because the options for these decks are set to 50 New and fifty Review cards, y'all may still take cards remaining. E'er call back the number of new cards you accept to complete for each deck per mean solar day. On the ' Congratulations ' screen, click [Custom Study] and the first 2 option volition show you how many total New and Review cards you have remaining in the deck. Select 'Increase today'south new card limit' and add together cards on top of the 50 then you can reach your daily requirement. Do the same for reviews. Ideally, you lot want to complete ALL due review cards for each twenty-four hour period. The 50N 50R setting allows you to have control over how many reviews y'all are doing so to not get overwhelmed on busy days. If yous practise happen to autumn back on reviews, just increase the number the next day to brand upwards (missed reviews always bear over to the adjacent twenty-four hour period).
Faster Alternating Scheduling Method (Optional)
§ If you feel overwhelmed past the daunting task of completing a giant deck, yous can really double your pace by tweaking i small setting. I was able to go through a deck of 29,000 cards in two months using this method. I will all the same warn y'all that you will exist sacrificing some retention for speed. Retention and speed are opposites past nature whether you're using Anki or not. I was willing to run a risk losing a trivial bit of retention in return for saving a LOT of time, and in hindsight it was absolutely worth it. I was able to focus on other high yield resources such as question banks and review books with the time I saved.
To implement this, open up the settings for a deck and enter the number ten nether 'Steps'. This setting ways that if you reply a card correctly, information technology will 'graduate' to the side by side interval immediately, and if y'all reply it incorrectly, you volition see it again inside 10 minutes. This method in a manner turns your deck into a behemothic quiz: just press 'good' if you know the answer or printing 'once more' if you don't. I recommend this setting for people who are stressed for time or those who are starting late.
Important Tips
-
Anki is a delivery, for the all-time results you lot must study your cards EVERY Single DAY, no excuses!
-
When studying, you should ever hit [Skillful] when seeing a new card for the starting time time. When that card comes over again, hitting [Practiced] if yous remember it or [Once again] if you don't. Aforementioned goes for reviews and quondam cards. Never hit [Easy] unless yous know the carte common cold and can recite it in your slumber.
-
Report in Pomodoro intervals, otherwise information technology can get mundane sometimes.
-
Don't seek to exist a perfectionist, just make the damn cards however you can and do them!
-
Download Anki on your phone and written report while you commute, await on lines, exercise, etc…

Common Questions
[Preferences] Explained
Show new cards after reviews: This setting is preferred because reviews are critically more of import than new cards for the spaced repetition algorithm to piece of work. Always prioritize reviews over new cards. Having the custom option of "50N 50R Ordered" allows you to be in command just in example you need to prioritize new cards on a detail day maybe because you are behind or whatever. On a 24-hour interval like this, practise the 50 reviews which will accept no more than fifteen minutes and and then but consummate new cards until you are caught up.
[Options] Explained
Steps: 3 15: This ways that when yous answer 'Good' on a bill of fare, information technology will be shown again inside 15 minutes. When shown again and you hit 'Again' which means you lot forgot the menu, it will be shown to you inside three minutes once again. This continues until the card "Graduates" to the next interval. This setting lonely ensures Anki'southward failsafe method for memorizing. It does not let y'all to movement on from a fact until you know it.
Maximum interval: The maximum number of days a card can go without you seeing it.
*Refer to the official Anki manual for all the intricate details. The settings I've explained are more often than not default with a few exceptions. These settings are backed upward by a ton of research by people similar Piotr Wozniak and other geniuses so don't tinker with them too much.*
